A little thoughtful preparation goes a long way in creating timeless, high-quality images you’ll treasure for years to come. Here are a few simple tips to help you get the most out of your session!
Groom your horse as you would for a show. A thorough grooming, a bit of extra elbow grease, and a coat of hoof polish will help your horse truly shine on camera. Don’t worry about minor scrapes, insect bites, or small imperfections—those will be carefully retouched during post-processing.
Make sure your tack is clean and properly fitted. Well-maintained tack photographs beautifully and keeps the focus where it belongs. If you plan to use any new equipment for your session, be sure to try it on and make adjustments ahead of time.
A happy horse makes the best photos. Keeping feeding, turnout, and exercise routines as normal as possible helps your horse feel relaxed and comfortable, which always shows in the final images. If you’d like your horse to be photographed in an unfamiliar area, spend some time acclimating him or her to that setting in the weeks prior to your shoot. That extra bit of prep makes all the difference in keeping your horse calm and cooperative!
Choose clothing that feels classic and comfortable. Neutral tones that complement your horse's coat, simple layers, and solid colors photograph best and help create timeless images. Avoid loud logos or busy patterns, and make sure boots and helmets are clean. Most importantly, wear something that feels like you— what matters most is that you feel comfortable and confident.
Prepare the location if needed. If we’ll be photographing in a barn aisle or other barn space, taking a few minutes to clear clutter, move vehicles, and tidy the area can go a long way. Simple, clean surroundings allow your horse to be the true focus of the portrait.
Trust the timing and the process. Sessions are scheduled with light in mind, as it plays a major role in the mood and quality of your images. My goal is to create a fun and positive experience, so no need to stress! I’ll guide you through positioning, cues, and adjustments throughout the session.
Share any inspiration or specific poses you love. If there are particular images, poses, or styles that speak to you, I encourage you to share them ahead of time. While every horse and setting is unique, I’ll do my very best to recreate the feeling and composition of the images you’re drawn to, while tailoring them to your horse and your story.
At the end of the day, preparation helps set the stage, but the heart of every great portrait is the connection you share with your horse.
